WE DID IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! IT’S FINALLY UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A year ago I was chosen to help design and create a mural with the CIL Center for Independent Living to celebrate the 50th. Anniversary and the Disability Rights Movement. I got to work with two other creative artists with disabilities, Charles Blackwell and Tiffany Hong. Along with two professional muralists, Pancho Pescador and Pablo Ruiz-Arroyo in creating this mural. A special thanks to Sara Kershner who put this group together, got funding for this project, and did all the organizing with the Oakland airport. After a year this mural is finally up in the Oakland airport, in the walkway of terminal 1 and terminal 2 by the Southwest baggage claim. If you’re going to travel to or from Oakland airport, look for this mural!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It’s huge, and it will be up there for a year!!!!!!!!!!

In the center of the mural is Ed Roberts who had polio, started the independent living and the disability rights movement. Besides him, we included Brad Lomax and Judy Heumann who were big activists of the disability rights movement. Since Judy Heumann recently passed away in March of this year, this mural is a sweet way to honor her legacy along with Ed Roberts and Brad Lomax.

The two pieces on the top left are my pieces. The two pieces in the top middle were done by Charles Blackwell. The piece on the top right corner was done by Tiffany Hong. Pablo and Pancho did the main part of the mural. It was definitely a fun collaboration project. It was such an honor to be chosen to work with these incredible artists and be a part of historical occasion celebrating 50 years of the Center of Independent Living and the Disability Rights Movements.
